Winter evenings can get chaotic in a home with children. It gets dark early, it’s cold outside, and everyone is cooped up in the house together. Instead of each family member heading off to a different corner of the house, get creative and use this time together for fun family activities.
Ideas for Cozy Winter Family Time
Take a look at these six ideas for cozy winter family fun to help you get started.
There are all kinds of possibilities here. For a household with older children choose to read aloud poetry for kids and have each family member take a turn doing a dramatic reading for the group. If your children love adventure stories, mysteries, or fantasy novels, get a recommendation from your local librarian and check out a book to read together. While you read aloud children can play quietly with blocks or puzzles as they listen. Don’t forget to discuss the plot as you go. For extra entertainment have the kids act out their favorite scenes.
Homemade Popcorn Bar
Put a new spin on your movie night snack. A popcorn bar might just turn into the star of the show. Set out a variety of toppings on the kitchen table and let each child adorn their individual bowl full of popcorn. Some yummy suggestions include shredded cheese, garlic salt, melted butter, cinnamon and sugar, crushed candies, and chocolate chips.
Gather ‘round the kitchen table with a board game and let the laughs ensue! There are many games suitable for very young children that are also fun for teenagers and grown ups. Young kids might enjoy HiHo! Cherry O, CandyLand, Ants in the Pants, or Chutes and Ladders. Groups with older children can get into Pictionary, Cranium, Apples to Apples, or Bananagrams.
Family Art Project
Are the members of your tribe artistic souls? Brainstorm for an art project that everyone can contribute to and set aside several evenings to complete it. Consider things like mural paintings, tie-dye, decopage, or homemade puppets.
Which leads us to the next idea…
Hang a curtain in your hallway to act as the stage. You can make your own puppets out of socks, paper bags, or anything else you think will work. It is especially fun to go through your recycling bin for puppet making materials. If your family owns puppets already you can skip the creating step and move right along to the script writing. For extra fun invite grandparents or neighbors over to watch the final performance.
Have a make your own pizza night. Let everyone add their own favorite toppings. You can make your own pizza crust or buy pre-made crust (we like the individual-size Boboli pizza crust). Set out pizza sauce and toppings such as cheese, pepperoni, pineapples and fresh veggies. Let them create their own individual pizza.
The most important thing is to enjoy evenings spent with your family. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be fun so relax and savor some cozy winter family time with your favorite people.
